Midterm Reflection (10/13/14)
The first half of this semester of UWRT 1103 has been successful in my eyes. The semester has actually gone by quickly, although it seems like I’ve been at college for a much longer time than two months. I have learned many things in UWRT so far. I’ve learned what my writing style is, the environment/style for which I write best, how to apply writings to my life, and the importance of literacy in our everyday lives.
I hope to learn more about the application to literature in my life, and how I can personally write better and make the most out of my time writing. I want to apply this course to the rest of my college career, and beyond it. This is going to be my only writing/English class in college, and I want it to teach me more about how I can become a better writer and make the most of my time writing.
This class has helped me with my writings in my other classes. As an engineering student, I have to do a lot of technical writing. I have to write memos, proposals, lab reports, and essays. This class has helped me apply my writing skills to the rest of my classes. I believe that my application of this class to others has helped me achieve higher grades on some of my assignments.
My writing process starts with an outline. I make an outline of the main topic for every paragraph, and what I can write about in each one. I do this in a bullet point format. I write my paper based on the outline. While I write, I fill in the outline with any additional ideas that I come up with so I don’t forget them. I do this until the paper is complete. My writing process has not really changed since I started UWRT 1103, but the class has helped me discover that the outline writing process is the best fit for me, and I have learned to apply it better to my writings.
My goals for this semester were to be the best student I could be, and achieve an A in the class. I knew that this course would not be as strenuous and demanding as my other engineering courses, but I didn’t want that fact to make me blow the course off and not do my work. So far, I think I have achieved these goals. I attend class, do my work, have an A in the course, and spend plenty of time on my papers and projects. I believe that these goals have been reached, but not surpassed.
I am proud of my literacy memoir. I spent a lot of time on this writing assignment, and it really helped me discover how reading affects my life. I do not like reading, but reading has really shaped who I am today in reference to the Bible. Writing this paper really helped me see that, and has helped me respect literature.
My favorite writing assignment so far has actually been the Multi-Genre Project. I like this project because I can write about something that fascinates me, and that I have knowledge about. I can directly apply this assignment to my major, and I can learn a lot from it. I can even educate others on what I am interested in. The freedom of this project has really boosted my interest level in it.
If I could change anything about this class, it would be the pre-class readings. These readings bore me, and I find it quite challenging to respond to a reading that I am not interested in, or that I cannot make a connection with. I think that more discussions about writing, and techniques about writing, would help me learn more in this class, and be able to apply this class to my other classes better. I would like to learn more techniques, tips, or tricks to make my writings easier and better.
